Creditors Develop New Ways to Collect Outstanding Debts

As the economy continues to pull itself from the depths of the recession many Ohio residents are experiencing that same slow rise; some of them are impeded by their outstanding debts to a number of creditors.

To make matters worse, it turns out that for debt collectors and creditors there are new methods available to force those who owe into paying. For example, in a number of states creditors now simply file lawsuits against debtors in the hope that they will not show up in court to defend themselves.

If a debtor does not defend himself or herself in court then collectors are often able to get a default judgment. With that judgment in hand, they can have a judge put liens on properties, garnish wages, or even freeze bank accounts in certain cases. This debt collection tactic on occasion affects those who never even had debts to begin with, but who nonetheless could not defend themselves in court before property or other assets were taken from them.

If you have past-due debts and cannot seem to escape harassing creditors and debt collectors, then it may be a good idea to consult with an attorney regarding your legal options to keep a debt collector off your back.

It is important to remember that you have rights in the debt collection process, and an attorney may help you make sense of how to best to pay back or resolve your debts in a timely manner, without being unfairly harassed by your lenders.
