A Brain Injury Can Leave You With Permanent Disabilities

A traumatic brain injury or a TBI occurs when an outside force causes an injury the head or brain, such as through a bump, blow or jolt to the head. A brain injury can also occur due to objects piercing the skull, lacerations or the brain hitting the skull due to intense shaking.

Brain injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, concussions and closed head injuries, can vary widely in severity but all require serious attention. A concussion, though often considered less severe, can lead to significant long-term health issues. Each type of brain injury can disrupt your life in profound ways, potentially leading to lifelong disabilities or changes in personality and cognitive function, ranging from memory loss, seizure disorders, vision problems and chronic headaches.

Common Causes Of Brain Injuries

Brain injuries can occur through a variety of accidents. In Hamilton County and the greater Cincinnati area, common causes include car accidents, slip and falls, as well as motorcycle, bicycle and truck accidents. In 2021, the Ohio Department of Health recorded 11,470 traumatic brain injury-related hospitalizations and 2,914 TBI-related deaths, many of them caused by automobile accidents and workplace injuries.

Types Of Brain Injuries

One of the most common types of brain injuries is a concussion, which can sometimes lead to short-term loss of consciousness, but not always. A concussion occurs when the brain moves violently in a back-and-forth or side-to-side motion, causing it to impact the inside of the skull. Such trauma can cause symptoms like mental confusion, dizziness, brain fog, loss of motor skills, and–occasionally–loss of consciousness.

In many cases, people recover from a concussion in about a week or two. However, some concussions can lead to longer-term symptoms. Repeated concussions often result in cumulative trauma, which can take a significant toll on cognitive and physical health. Over time, this can even introduce chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition.

Beyond concussions, the Brain Injury Association of America recognizes three levels of traumatic brain injury (TBI) severity. These are:

Mild brain injury
A mild brain injury may include a concussion. If it does cause a loss of consciousness, it is usually very brief, often just a few seconds or minutes. In many cases, there is no loss of consciousness at all. Symptoms may include memory loss, lethargy and fatigue, dizziness and vomiting.

Moderate brain injury
A moderate TBI can result in unconsciousness lasting up to 24 hours. Neuroimaging may reveal bleeding or contusions in the brain, and signs of physical trauma may be visible to medical professionals. Symptoms can include all of those listed that accompany mild injuries but may be more intense and longer lasting. They may also have significant sensitivity to light or sound, which can make social situations challenging.

Severe brain injury
The most well-known example of a severe brain injury is a coma. This category includes cases where unconsciousness lasts for more than 24 hours. During this time, the person may have no discernible wake/sleep cycle, and clear evidence of brain damage is typically present on scans. Even after recovery, people with severe TBIs often face lasting challenges, including the loss of motor skills, memory loss, personality changes, loss of language skills and mental health conditions such as anxiety or clinical depression.

Cutting-Edge Treatment For Brain Injuries

Depending on the severity of your injury, your treatment may consist of surgery, medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychological care. For long-term symptoms, you may have to endure follow up treatments and remain on medications for the rest of your life.

As medical science progresses, the treatment for brain injuries continues to evolve. However, accessing cutting-edge treatment can be prohibitively expensive. This underscores the necessity of having a skilled brain injury lawyer to secure the compensation required to cover medical costs and facilitate recovery. At the Minnillo Law Group, we are committed to fighting for the maximum compensation in your personal injury claim to ensure that you can access the best possible care for your head injury.
